Merlin Mann's tribute to the Flaming Lips got me thinking: how could such an obviously terrible one-hit wonder bunch of Gen-X slackers turn into one of our best and most surreal bands? They look like children in those early clips, and yet a decade later, who else would you want to be singing a White Stripes/Butthole Surfers mash-up through a megaphone?
