Of all the Big 10 contenders, Ohio State had the best weekend with its 58-7 win over Northwestern. Boeckman looked sharp, and Robiskie is officially the go-to guy. The early touchdowns, including the two long passes to Robiskie pretty much ended the game before it even began. This is the sort of fast start that Troy Smith and Ted Ginn were always trying for and could never quite pull off (as good as the '06 team was, they were notoriously slow starters). The goal for Ohio State is to keep Chris Wells healthy and keep playing with this level of consistency.
The reason why is simple: neither Wisconsin (in its 17-13 win over Iowa) or Penn State (in its 14-9 loss to Michigan) looked all that impressive over the weekend. Michigan would like to think that they are resurgent with their last two wins but Notre Dame (31-14 losers to Michigan State) may be one of the worst teams of all-time and Penn State's conservative offense played right into Michigan's hands.
With the exception of OSU this weekend (and Purdue who quietly have put together the #1 offense and a 4-0 record), none of the top teams showed that they could do much with the ball. And if they want to play these slow grind-it-out defensive games, well, the Buckeyes can do that too. OSU's defense is best in the Big 10 and #3 nationally.
Meanwhile, as good as they are USC is boring to watch. And LSU had too much rain. I know the Western and Southern schools are tops this year, but yawwwn.
Meanwhile, again, Colorado State lost to Houston. The less said the better, but its hard to figure how they're ever going to get on track. They haven't won a game since October 2006. Ugh.
