Lost - "D.O.C."

Lies, lies, and more lies. The show is becoming so tangled with half-truths, misdirections, cons, misunderstandings and conspiracies that I'm starting to miss the days when the characters didn't talk to each other or ask questions. No one gives a straight answer anyway.

The whole pregnancy storyline is a convoluted mess and frankly, I'm not sure if I believe any of it. We already know that Claire delivered just fine and it's not clear if Ethan's injections did anything or if we're just supposed to think they did, or if it was just part of the inplant maneuver.

Now with Sun's pregnancy, it's supposed to be a death sentence, but Juliet the genius fertility doctor doesn't know why that happens. Plus she's actually there to monitor Kate for reasons unknown and report back to Ben for reasons unknown if though she hates him for reasons sort of known.

Then Mikhail shows up. Mikhail, who was supposed to be dead, or faked his death, or faked his death with Locke's help, or the island brought him back to life (but couldn't fix his eye). Mikhail, who pretends to translate languages he probably doesn't understand. Did parachute girl say "Thank you for saving me" as he said, or did she say "I am not alone" as the discussion forum at TWoP suggests?

And meanwhile back in Korea, Sun's father is a gangster posing as an automotive executive; Sun is the good daughter pretending not to know anything; Jin is busy trying to hide his past even though everyone knows he's just a fisherman's son; Jin's mother, a former prostitute is blackmailing Sun about Jin's lowly origins; and Jin's father, who raised Jin despite not being certain of whether he was Jin's father or not, wants to protect Jin from the fact that his mother is still alive; and of course this just opens the door for Marvin Candle to be Jin's real father doesn't it?

Also, since Sun wasn't sure if Jin was the father or not, we had an extra level of lies and betrayal to deal with on top of the whole Sun's going to die thing. At least the ultrasound released her from her guilt, and it's hard to begrudge her genuine emotions, but still, sheeesh.

Or did it? Because Juliet could just as easily have been lying about the D.O.C. so she could fake out Ben and make him believe she found a cure for the pregnancy problem that may or may not exist on the island.

ANNND, after waiting the entire episode, parachute girl finally said something coherent and as predicted it was meant to twist our melons (though not in the way I was hoping): Flight 815 was found with no survivors. So Dharma or someone faked the crash to hide the fact that the survivors were on the island? It's either that or we have to trot out all of our old theories about purgatory, or the twilight zone, or parallel universes, or time loops, or something. Or, she's lying.

Here's what was good:

  • Jin's roundhouse kick on Mikhail.
  • Sun as the poor little rich girl.
  • The ever more complicated romance of Sun and Jin.
  • Jin's kind and gentle father.
  • Mikhail's surprising return!
Not so good:

  • Mikhail's surprising return! (Let's face it, he's a let down every time)
  • Hurley was suddenly twenty IQ points stupider.
  • Juliet's sympathy face.
  • In spite of all the good Sun/Jin stuff, I was bored.
  • Wasting time reviving parachute girl: get on with it!
New Theories:
  • Ugh, you've got me.
  • Next week, Locke and Sawyer face their nemesis...
