Why Do We Say 'Spot-On'?

It seems like there are suddenly a lot of Americans saying "spot on" to mean that someone's comments or performance is exactly right. Sounds very British to me though.

I mostly see it in comments and forums where it's useful short hand for "I agree", "me too", "ditto that".

I'm just curious as to the origin of its sudden popularity. Is it something that Simon says a lot on American Idol?
